WHATS APP TABLE TOPIC 1: Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you.

Good Day to all Toastmasters and especially to my Table Topics Master Raul Pereira and to the hidden secret judge too.

Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you.

This is called the GOLDEN RULE and its source can be found in many scriptures & ancient philosophies such as the Bible, Teachings of Confucius, and in Buddhism too.

Golden Rule of Confucius
Five Centuries before Christ, Confucius said:  "Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself." This was one of the guiding principles of life that Confucius taught his followers. This was the first mention of the so called Golden Rule.

Golden Rule of Buddha
"Treat people the way you'd like to be treated". "Hurt not others with that which pains yourself." From the Udanavarga 5:18- Buddhism: 560 BC.

Golden Rule of Jesus Christ
Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you is a direct quote from the Bible at Mathew Chapter 7 Verse 12. This Golden Rule is part and parcel of the long and famous PUBLIC SPEECH or otherwise also called as SERMON ON THE MOUNT as attributed to the sayings and teachings of Jesus Christ around 3 B.C

What does this Golden Rule personally mean to me?
I would like to share an incident how my mother used to mis apply this Golden Rule at weddings and festive times in Mumbai. Whenever she used to get gifts from anyone, she used to note the type of gift and its value in rupees against the person’s name, in a diary for future use. I used to argue with her lots, that this is so wrong. Give. What you want to give. From your heart. She used to tell me to Shut Up. Saying that she is practicing the Golden Rule. My friends & relatives will get some gift when it comes to my time to give, and I will give exactly of the same value, back to them.

THE GOLDEN RULE IS ALL ABOUT EMPHATHY

The Golden Rule doesn't really mean that you should treat someone else exactly as you'd want them to treat you … it means that you should try to imagine how they want to be treated, and do that. So when you put yourself in their shoes, ask yourself how you think they want to be treated.
